The Sycamore Beanie Knitting Pattern: A Chunky, Textured Beanie With Pom

The Design Concept Of The Sycamore Beanie Knitting Pattern: Lots Of Texture & A Classic Shape

The design concept for The Sycamore Beanie knitting pattern was simple actually: to design a textured, ultra-cozy knit beanie that's the perfect accessory for fall or winter. When designing this beanie, I knew I wanted to make the body of the hat very textured and cozy, so I chose a stitch that has a lot of definition and makes a big impact. Made using variegated yarn that's filled with lovely earthy, neutral tones, The Sycamore Beanie reminds me of the camouflaged bark on the sycamore trees when they shed their bark and it's all textured.

I personally love knitted beanies during winter because I'm constantly hiking The Rockies at altitude where the weather is brutal. I love to have a beanie that is thick and cozy but also stylish. In my opinion, sometimes knitted beanies can have a "handmade" look to it, that I'm not a big fan of; usually those types of beanies are knitted with super-bulky weight yarn. And surprisingly, whenever I've worn those types of super bulky knitted beanies while hiking, they end up being colder than beanies I've knitted with lighter-weight yarn! So I purposely designed The Sycamore Beanie to be knitted with worsted/medium-weight (category 4) yarn, which is a similar weight to the yarn used to make most commercial beanies when seen in stores or at retailers. Be sure to check out the video tutorial for this beanie here. I also filmed a left-handed version here.

Details Of The Sycamore Beanie Knitting Pattern

The Sycamore Beanie is knitted seamlessly in the round on circular knitting needles, first knitting the brim, and working your way up to the top. Instead of a typical ribbing at the brim, which in my opinion can sometimes look sloppy and definitely tends to show signs of the beanie being "handmade", the brim is knitted in a ribbing that makes it look cleaner and neater (don't worry, it's super easy!). But if you look closely at the photos, you'll notice that the brim ribbing pops a little more and the lines are super clean - which I love!

The body of The Sycamore Beanie is knitted in a very textured knit stitch that consists of simple decreases and increases worked in a sequence. And of course, you can't forget the pom pom! A yarn pom-pom is added to the top of The Sycamore Beanie to complete the look. The pattern (and video!) comes with instructions on how to  make the pom pom by hand, and even equips you with numerous step-by-step photos for reference. Overall, The Sycamore Beanie is a really fast and easy knitting project and it whips up super quickly. Perfect to stock up on and give as holiday gifts!

At Darling Jadore, we strive to create the highest quality patterns and videos, and all of our patterns are "live", meaning they are regularly updated and content (like more video tutorials) is continually being added to each pattern. What's The Difficulty Level For The Sycamore Beanie Knitting Pattern? Can I Knit It?

The knitting pattern for The Sycamore Beanie is suitable for beginner knitters to advanced-beginner knitters. Inside the knitting pattern, you'll gain access to detailed written instructions, links to numerous instructional videos and photos, a stitch glossary, a schematic with previse measurements, helpful photo tutorials, and all the attributes a knitting pattern ought to have. I specifically designed this beanie to be suitable for beginners and for it to be a fun and easy project with simple stitch repeats.

You'll need some basic knitting knowledge to be able to follow this pattern, such as knitting in the round on circular knitting needles and how to make simple increases and decreases. If you've never knitted in the round before, there are plenty of YouTube videos where you can learn (it's easy, I swear!). Once you knit a hat seamlessly on circular knitting needles, you'll never want to go back to using straight needles. Working in the round allows your beanie to have no seam at all, which makes the end design look much neater and professional, in my opinion. Don't forget about the Darling Jadore Learn page, which is loadedd with tons of tutorials and photos for many stitches and techniques required by The Sycamore Beanie knitting pattern. Our Learn page has been a huge hit this year!

Other than those techniques, the Sycamore Beanie is really a breeze to knit and they're fast enough to crank out a bunch for holiday gifts or for market prep.

Adapting The Sycamore Beanie Knitting Pattern

One of my favorite things about following a knit or crochet pattern is my ability to adapt it to make the finished item my own. And I get tons of questions all the time with customers asking me different ways of adapting my patterns. Anywhere from changing the yarn, the needle or hook size, etc. So I wanted to briefly touch on the variety of ways to adapt The Sycamore Beanie knitting pattern, if you want. While the work involved for each of my designs is very intensive (i.e., sketches, writing charts, calculating countless hours of math, measurements, gauge swatches etc), I'm also so pleased when I see customers adapt my patterns to make the overall finished garment or accessory the one they truly love! I'm proud that my designs are not only user-friendly and easy to understand, but are also simple enough to adapt, if you want to change a few things up a bit.

I specifically designed The Sycamore Beanie to fit most adult women head sizes. Many of my customers who have purchased other hat patterns I sell oftentimes will adapt my pattern to allow it to fit babies, toddlers, or men -- so if you're a proficient knitter, you'll be able to adapt The Sycamore Beanie to fit these different sizes if you want! Other changes that you can make that would look really cute for this hat are to add a faux fur pom pom to the top instead of the yarn pom pom. And you can always simply swap the unique bottom ribbing for a generic 1x1 ribbing to make it even easier! There are a variety of ways to adapt this knitting pattern to make it you own.

While all Darling Jadore knitting patterns contain all the instructions and information to make the exact design photographed, feel free to also play around with the pattern to create The Sycamore Beanie exactly how you want it.
