The Ruska Shawl Knitting Pattern ⨯ A Mustard Lace Half-Circle Shawl With Eyelets

The Design Concept Of The Ruska Shawl Knitting Pattern: Eyelet Lace Mustard Shawl For Fall

A lacy, mustard-yellow knitted scarf is a must-have during autumn for me, so I'd been playing around with the design concept for The Ruska Shawl knitting pattern since spring. It took me months of sketching and strategizing until I finally landed on a design that I fell in love with. The main inspiration behind The Ruska Shawl was the Quaking Aspens in the fall, and "Leaf Peeping" season here in Colorado, which is about to be underway in a few weeks.

Leaf Peeping is a well-known thing here in Colorado, and people come from all over the country to view the stunning colors that autumn brings to this beautiful state in mid-September. Quaking Aspens are trees that grow in little pockets or groves, so you'll see groups of gorgeous gold trees clustered together throughout the forests, and when you walk into these pockets, the sunshine hits the leaves when they're quivering and rustling in the wind, and it looks like sunshine is dancing around and hitting off a big golden disco ball -- it's magical! I wanted to try my best to design a shawl that captured how beautifully the Aspen leaves flutter in the wind. So for The Ruska Shawl knitting pattern, I designed the entire body of the shawl to have lovely eyelet lace details, to be airy and flowy, and mimic the sunshine peeking through in these Aspen groves. And then for the border edge, I made it look like the wind breeze twisting and sweeping around. The edge actually looks like it requires cables, but no cabling is required whatsoever in this pattern, making it fun and easy and perfect for advanced-beginner knitters or newbie shawl knitters looking to make a beautiful accessory for autumn.

You can also grab the pattern on Ravelry, Etsy, or Loveknitting!

The Lace Details Of The Ruska Shawl Knitting Pattern & Other Info

The knitting pattern for The Ruska Shawl allows you to knit a beautiful half-circle shawl that is covered in gorgeous eyelet lace throughout the entire body of the shawl, and then gently flows into a beautiful edge border that also features eyelet lace and mimics the appearance of cables, but no cabling is required (phew!). I specifically designed this knitting pattern to be suitable for advanced-beginners, and it only includes simple knit stitches and lace techniques -- nothing complicated or frustrating. The edge border might look like it requires twisted stitches or cabling, but none of that was used; instead, simple stitches, increases, and decreases is all that is used. The Ruska Shawl is knitted seamlessly flat from the top down on circular knitting needles (but not joined in the round) to accommodate the growing number of stitches as you gradually increase this shawl to the size required. Overall, this knitting pattern is a breeze to knit, and it whips up very quickly.

Because of the half-circle shape of The Ruska Shawl, there are a variety of ways it can be worn -- as a scarf wrapped once or twice, draped over your shoulders like a shawl or small cape, etc. We had a lot of fun photographing this scarf to capture some of the ways it can be worn.

Who Can Knit The Ruska Shawl? What's The Difficulty Level?

The Ruska Shawl knitting pattern is suitable for advanced-beginner knitters. I specifically designed this shawl to be easy to make, but also keep the knitter's interest with some lace details -- but nothing too complicated. The unique half-circle shape of the shawl is easy to construct, and the eyelet lace is super simple as well. The body of the shawl is flowing in a gorgeous sea of classic knit stitches with eyelets, so it is very simple and meditative to follow. In fact, once you find your rhythm, the body of the shawl is quite addicting! The easy stitch repeats for the body of the shawl make it a very relaxing project that can easily be taken on the go.

The edge border of The Ruska Shawl features a few eyelets, increases, and decreases, but all very simple. The stitch repeats for the edge are slightly more detailed, but overall require only basic knitting techniques -- nothing complicated at all! I love the way the edge border turned out, because it gives the appearance of cabling or twisted stitches or something far more complicated, but it doesn't require working any of those more difficult stitches at all and only consists of basic knit stitches. You'll be surprised by how quickly The Ruska Shawl works up!

Ways To Style And Wear The Finished Ruska Shawl

As you can see from the photos, there's a variety of ways to wear and style The Ruska Shawl when you've finished knitting it. It can be worn as a regular scarf around your neck, which I think looks so cute and stylish with all the lacework peeping through. Since this shawl is knitted with light-weight yarn, it can easily be worn delicately around you neck without any bulk. It can also be wrapped around your neck, almost like you'd wrap a triangle scarf around your neck, and have the big portion of the scarf in front. It can also be styled to look like a classic shawl or "capelet" by itself, where it's draped around your shoulders. This is how I mostly wore it in the campaign photos, and I prefer it best because it really shows off all the details of the shawl. And it's really the perfect accessory to drape around you when its chilly out or to use when traveling on an airplane because it's so cozy and soft but folds up  small to stow away.

The Ruska Shawl is incredibly versatile, which makes me love it that much more! As with many shawls, The Ruska Shawl can also be used as a decor piece, and I often drape my knitted shawls over a lounge chair or in a decorative bin/basket and nobody can tell that it's a shawl and not a throw blanket. I particularly love stowing away a shawl in my Belly Basket, and have it draping over the side -- the pop of mustard yellow is so cute! In fact, one of the ways I store finished designs is to use them as decor pieces throughout my home. Definitely recommend giving this little decor tip a try!
