The Canyon Shawl Knitting Pattern ⨯ A Beginner-Friendly Asymmetrical Scarf Knitted On The Bias

The Design Concept For The Canyon Scarf Knitting Pattern: A Unique, Asymmetrical Shawl/Scarf

The initial design concept for The Canyon Scarf knitting pattern came from a trip I took while traveling where I saw this giant canyon (see photo below!). The beautiful colors and unique shapes inspired me to design an asymmetrical scarf that's knitted on the bias, and would be the perfect, meditative project for beginner-scarf/shawl knitters.  The colors of the canyon that day were spectacular, so it took awhile to find the yarn I thought would capture the day perfectly, and when the perfect yarn plus design merged, The Canyon Scarf was born!

The thing I just love about The Canyon Scarf knitting pattern is that it is suitable for beginners, with only simple increases and it's engulfed in the gorgeous, timeless garter stitch, which makes any knitwear piece an instant classic. The scarf is knitted on the bias, meaning it looks like it's knitted diagonally, which makes the scarf extra special. The pattern equips you with detailed instructions, a schematic with precise measurements, a stitch glossary with links to helpful content, and more. The Canyon Scarf can be worn and styled so many different ways, that we had a lot of fun styling the campaign shots. I've been really into versatile and functional knitwear pieces lately, and scarves that double as shawls and vice versa are really at the top of my list for this fall and winter season.

Psst...you can also grab this pattern on Ravelry, Etsy, and LoveKnitting!

The Knitted Details Of the Canyon Scarf Knitting Pattern: Classic Garter Stitch

The Canyon Scarf is a knitted scarf or shawl that is covered in a gorgeous sea of classic garter stitch, making it extra squishy, soft, and cuddly. I absolutely love garter stitch, and think items knitted using garter stitch always end up so timeless -- so I was eager to make The Canyon Scarf using garter stitch. The scarf is seamlessly knitted flat on circular knitting needles, to accommodate the growing number of stitches when knitting it. The Canyon Scarf  is naturally knitted "on the bias", which means that it looks like the stitches are going diagonally, which gives this scarf a unique design element that I love. Don't worry - it's way easier than it looks, and you'll be hooked to this relaxing pattern in no time.

Besides knitting the classic, meditative garter stitch for the entirety of the scarf, you'll also be incorporating very simple increase stitches every other row. These increases are easy and there is a stitch glossary with directions. Once you get the hang of knitting The Canyon Scarf, this scarf is a breeze to knit and can easily be taken on the go without needing to keep the pattern file on hand for reference -- its super easy to memorize. It's a great "Netflix knit", because it's not complicated at all. And we all need a relaxing knitting project every now and again, right?!

Can I Knit This Scarf? What's The Difficulty Level?

Even though the asymmetrical design of this scarf may look intimidating with an asymmetrical shape and diagonal stitches, I actually designed it to be suitable for beginner shawl/scarf-knitters. So if you've never knitted a scarf before, or if you're wanting to knit a scarf that's a little more unique than a classic rectangle, The Canyon Scarf knitting pattern is definitely for you. The scarf is knitted in the classic knit stitch (aka: "Garter Stitch") and there are a few increases and decreases required for this pattern, but they are very simple, and there is a stitch glossary explaining the stitches in details.

If you just stumpled on Darling Jadore and have never knitted before but are itching to try out this knitting pattern, we gotchu! We have a highly-detailed "Learn" resources page that includes loads of tips and helpful information for reading, understanding, and following Darling Jadore knitting patterns. There, you can learn to cast on, bind off, learn all the basic stitches required for our knitting patterns, and more. Don't understand the difference between parenthesis, asterisks, and brackets within the knitting pattern? You can learn there. Want to know the low down on blocking? It's all there. Want recommendations on which tools you ought to keep in your knitting tool kit? It's all there! We've been working really hard behind the scenes over here at Darling Jadore to create the most comprehensive *free* resource for knitters at all their stages to reference -- novice to expert.
