The Veil Top: A Lightweight Mohair Knitting Pattern in Progress

There is something deeply satisfying about starting a new knitting project that feels different from anything you have made before. The Veil Top is exactly that kind of project for me. It is a lightweight mohair blouse/top knitted from the top down in raglan construction, and the fabric is so sheer and airy that it practically floats. That quality is exactly how this knit sweater got its name. I'm still in the process of designing and knitting it, but I wanted to share this journey with you.

Why It Is Called The Veil Top Knitting Pattern

When I started knitting the first swatch with Knitting for Olive Soft Silk Mohair held double, the fabric that formed was unlike any I had knit before. It was gossamer thin, featherlight, and almost translucent, with that signature mohair halo catching the light. It reminded me of a veil. Not heavy or structured, but delicate and fluid, draping beautifully with natural movement. The name was immediate and obvious. This is a top that feels like wearing a cloud.

The Yarn: Knitting for Olive Soft Silk Mohair

This mohair yarn is one of my favorites for good reason. It is a blend of 70% kid mohair and 30% mulberry silk, which means the yarn is impossibly soft without any of the scratchiness that people sometimes associate with mohair. Held double, it creates a fabric with real substance while keeping everything lightweight and breathable. The halo effect is gorgeous and adds a softness to the finished fabric that you simply cannot replicate with other fibers.

If you have never worked with mohair yarn before, it can feel unfamiliar at first. The yarn is fine and fuzzy, and frogging is nearly impossible because the fibers bloom and grab onto each other. That is actually part of the magic. Once the stitches settle into place, the fabric becomes cohesive and stable while remaining incredibly light. For a knit top meant for warm weather, mohair is an ideal choice because the open structure of the fabric allows air to circulate freely.

Top Down Raglan Construction

The Veil Top is worked seamlessly from the top down using raglan construction. If you have knit any of my other sweater knitting patterns, this construction will feel familiar. You begin at the neckline, work raglan increase rounds to shape the yoke, then divide for the body and sleeves and continue each section in the round.

I chose top down raglan for this knitting pattern because it gives knitters the ability to try the garment on as they go, which is especially valuable with a yarn like mohair. Because the gauge and drape can behave differently from wool or cotton, being able to hold the piece up and check the fit before committing to body length is a real advantage. Top down construction also means no seaming, which keeps the finished garment smooth and streamlined.

Intentionally Minimal Details For This Knit Top

One of the design principles behind this knit top is restraint. Mohair yarn has so much natural beauty through its halo and sheen that overloading it with complex stitch patterns would compete with the yarn rather than complement it. The Veil Top is mostly stockinette, letting the fabric itself be the focal point. The silhouette is relaxed and breezy, perfect as a knitted layering piece over a simple camisole or worn on its own during warm evenings.

Every design choice in this knitting pattern was made with intention. The neckline sits comfortably without being too wide or too tight. The knitted body will have enough ease to drape without clinging. None of these details shout for attention, but together they create a garment that feels polished and considered.

What Makes Mohair Special for Warm Weather Knitting

It might seem counterintuitive to knit a top for warm weather, but mohair yarn is genuinely one of the best fibers for breezy, lightweight knitting. The open structure of the fabric allows air to move through it freely, and the kid mohair fiber is naturally temperature regulating. When you knit mohair at a relaxed gauge, as in this knitting pattern, the resulting fabric is airy enough to be comfortable even in heat.

This is also why mohair yarn has become such a popular choice in modern knitwear design. Knitters are discovering that mohair is not just for heavy winter sweaters. Worked at the right gauge on the right needles, mohair yarn creates fabrics that are perfect for spring and summer. A lightweight mohair knit top is the kind of piece you reach for when the evening cools down or when you want a layer that adds texture without warmth.
