Surface crochet is one of my favorite ways to add personality to knitwear — especially to my kiddos’ knit sweaters. It allows you to “draw” directly on top of a finished knitted piece using simple crochet chains, making it perfect for small, meaningful details.
In two recent videos, I used surface crochet to customize my children’s sweaters — one with a simple monogrammed “A”, and another with playful basketball and football motifs. These small additions instantly made each toddler sweater feel personal and uniquely theirs.
Why Surface Crochet Works So Well
What makes surface crochet so great is how approachable it is. You don’t need advanced crochet skills or special tools — just a crochet hook and a bit of yarn. Because the technique sits on top of the knitted fabric, it’s forgiving and easy to adjust.
If you change your mind (which happens often with kids), surface crochet can be removed without damaging the knit fabric underneath. That flexibility makes it ideal for children’s garments, gifts, and heirloom pieces that may evolve over time.
A Simple How-To: Getting Started
To begin, insert your crochet hook from the front of the knitted fabric to the back, pull up a loop of yarn, and work a chain stitch across the surface by inserting the hook into the next stitch below. Continue chaining to create letters, shapes, or simple designs, following the knit stitches as your guide.
Start with something small — a single letter, a heart, or a basic shape — and work slowly. Surface crochet is less about perfection and more about intention. Each stitch adds character, turning a simple sweater into something deeply personal. Happy crochet! x
