The Rainfall Shawl Knitting Pattern ⨯ A Western Boho Half-Circle Shawl With Tassels

The Design Concept Of The Rainfall Shawl Knitting Pattern: Simple Lace With A Touch Of Tassels

When designing The Rainfall Shawl knitting pattern, I knew right away I wanted to knit a boho-inspired shawl that had drop stitches, simple lace, and tassels! I absolutely love the look of tassels on knitwear accessories, but I wanted to make the tassels for this particular shawl extra long and flowy, and to create a design that reminded me of rain falling. Living out west, we don't get a lot of rain; so when it does rain, it's always a nice, much-needed refreshment for the land and always makes for the coziest day spent indoors. For The Rainfall Shawl, I designed it to be a classic half-circle shape with a body that is filled with simple stitches and pretty little lace details that run diagonally -- which I thought mimicked rain drops falling down a window. The sea of classic stitches gradually grows and turns into two rows of different-sized lace to complete the edge/border of the shawl. Then the shawl ends with a crescendo of long, flowing tassels.

I absolutely love the way the lace stitches appear in this shawl, and to me, it really does remind me of rain falling. I purposely picked a yarn that was an earthy muted brown shade (because it's one of my favorite colors to knit with!) and it's variegated to create almost a glistening effect -- again, reminiscent of water droplets. Overall, the knitting pattern for The Rainfall Shawl is an easy knit and a great shawl for beginners that is easily adaptable (e.g., you can make the tassels shorter or eliminate them all together if you prefer). In fact, I specifically designed this shawl for beginner-shawl knitters! It's really easy to follow and mediatative to knit. The Rainfall Shawl can also be worn a variety of ways (see photos below), which makes it even more unique and functional!

More Details Of The Rainfall Shawl Knitting Pattern: Method, Features, & More

Inside the PDF for The Rainfall Shawl knitting pattern, you'll gain access to detailed written instructions, a stitch glossary, a schematic with measurements, helpful photo content, and all the attributes a knitting pattern ought to have. The Rainfall Shawl is knitted seamlessly flat from the top down on long circular needles, but you will not join in the round. You will use long circular knitting needles to knit The Rainfall Shawl to accommodate for the growing number of stitches that gradually increase as you work toward the bottom, but it will be worked flat, back and forth. As I said before: I designed this shawl with beginner shawl-knitters in mind, so its fun and easy to knit - yay! The body of the shawl is filled with simple stitches with increases. This portion of the pattern is so easy and relaxing to make, and in my opinion, it's what makes The Rainfall Shawl have a classic look to it. So I purposely offset the somewhat exaggerated lace and tassels with a simple, sleek body of the shawl to make it a timeless knitwear accessory. Overall, this knitting pattern is a breeze to work through and is a fun, meditative, relaxing project that whips up in no time.

Who Can Knit The Rainfall Shawl? Difficulty Level Of The Knitting Pattern

The Rainfall Shawl knitting pattern was specifically designed with beginner shawl-knitters in mind, and requires only simple stitches and techniques. In fact, the only techniques involved are: knit, purl, and yarn over increases. Everything  you need to know to knit this shawl is located inside the pattern PDF and also shown on our "Learn" page here - trust us, you got this! It's a fun and easy project.  If you've never knitted a shawl before and want a pattern to start, then The Rainfall Shawl would be the perfect place! This classic half-circle shaped shawl requires only basic knit and purl stitches, and simple increases, and that's it. Overall, this pattern is really easy to follow and it works up really fast too since it's knitted using worsted/medium-weight yarn that makes it fly by really quickly.

You might be wondering whether or not you'll need to block the shawl once you've finished knitting it. A lot of shawls need to be wet or steamed blocked after knitting them in order for it to lay flat or show off the details the best. While this might be a necessary step for many shawl designs, I specifically designed The Rainfall Shawl for beginners, therefore there is no blocking required! I designed the edges of this shawl to have a simple selvage so that the finished shawl lays relatively flat without blocking it. All this might sound confusing, but the only techniques and stitches required for this pattern is knit, purl, and yarn over increases! For the shawl in the photographs, I did block it, but that's only because I block all of my knitwear -- I personally prefer it, and think it lets the fabric and yarn soften up a little, and when photographing the campaign shots for any of my designs, I always make sure they are blocked. However, there really wasn't a need to block this shawl, and you can totally get away with a simply steam on the end tassels to straighten them out a bit, if you prefer. If you're like me though, and prefer blocking all your knits, I highly recommend these blocking mats and wires and t-pins to make the process so much easier!

Ways To Style And Use The Rainfall Shawl

As you can see from the photos, there's a variety of ways to wear and style The Rainfall Shawl after you've finished knitting it. It can be worn as a regular scarf around your neck, which I think looks so cute with the tassels hanging down. It can also be wrapped around your neck, almost like you'd wrap a triangle scarf around your neck, and have the big portion of the scarf in front. It can also be styled to look almost like a poncho or little cape or "capelet", where it's draped over your shoulders. This is how I wore it in the campaign photos, and I prefer it best. It looks like a poncho/cape, and is super cute paired with jeans and boots. It really has a western-boho vibe to it when worn this way.

As with many shawls, The Rainfall Shawl can also be used as a decor piece, and I often drape my knitted shawls over a lounge chair or in a decorative bin/basket and nobody can tell that it's a shawl and not a throw blanket. I particularly love stowing away a shawl in my Belly Basket, and have it draping over the side. In fact, one of the ways I store finished designs is to use them as decor pieces throughout my home. I Definitely recommend giving this little decor tip a try!

Adapting The Rainfall Shawl Knitting Pattern

One of my favorite things about following a knit or crochet pattern is my ability to adapt it to make the finished item my own. And I get tons of questions all the time with customers asking me different ways of adapting my patterns. Anywhere from changing the yarn, the needle or hook size, etc. So I wanted to briefly touch on the variety of ways to adapt The Rainfall Shawl knitting pattern, if you want. While the work involved for each of my designs is very intensive (i.e., sketches, writing charts, calculating countless hours of math, measurements, gauge swatches etc), I'm also so pleased when I see customers adapt my patterns to make the overall finished garment or accessory the one they truly love! I'm proud that my designs are not only user-friendly and easy to understand, but are also simple enough to adapt, if you want to change a few things up a bit.

With all Darling Jadore knit or crochet garments (i.e., sweaters, cardigans), I find it best to stick as closely to the gauge swatch, needle size, and yarn weight indicated within the pattern. But overall, as long as you meet the gauge swatch requirements, you're good to go. With scarves, shawls, and other accessories, however, there's a lot more space to change things up! For The Rainfall Shawl knitting pattern, for example, you can use a lighter-weight yarn (e.g., DK-weight) and smaller-sized needles, and the shawl with therefore turn out smaller which would be great for summer/spring. Reversely, you can work with bulky or super bulky-weight yarn and have a big, chunky finished shawl. You can also feel free to eliminate the tassels and/or bottom edge lacework altogether and go for a more refined edge instead. And of course, with most Darling Jadore shawl or scarf patterns, you can stop the pattern short (in other words, eliminate some of the pattern) to make the overall size or length of the scarf or shawl smaller. There a numerous ways to adapt The Rainfall Shawl knitting pattern to give the final shawl a more personal touch, and these are just a few examples.

While all the pattern PDFs contains all the instructions and information to make the exact design photographed, feel free to also play around with the pattern to create The Rainfall Shawl exactly how you want it.
